The past lava flows of Mount Etna

Mount Etna can described as andesitic composite volcano.

It is on a destructive plate boundary where the African plate (continental) is being subducted beneath the Eurasian plate (continental). In this region there are shallow focus earthquakes and volcanic eruptions from the active volcanoes including, Vesuvius, Stromboli, Volanco and Mount Etna.

Lumpy, slightly stiff lava ('Aa Aa'  is the technical - Hawaiian - term for the jagged lava produced in the photograph). The lumpy lava pours out from the crater and is more damaging to property (a socio-economic impact). As it is less explosive, it is not often an immediate threat to life (demographic impact).
