Changing rural settlements - Henley in Arden

Henley in Arden (Warwickshire) has become a commuter village for the Birmingham conurbation. The M40 and M42 provide swift access to the West Midland's economic zones by private car - whilst the rail link goes right into the CBD of Birmingham, taking approximately 40 minutes. Shops and services have changed to accommodate the new commuters, with an increase in restaurants, wine bars, antique shops and estate agents and well as the building on modern, courtyard homes.

The top left photograph shows key road signs, suggesting how journey times have reduced due to improved transport links for the private car, causing smaller villages in Warwickshire to become domitory villages

Top right shows the newer housing developments that cater for the 'business' commuters, gated housing with parking facilities.

Left - shows a the older, traditional housing from when the village originally developed as a rural, farming settlement. Notice there is now a problem with parking!
